We Made It To The Moon

After that wretched day... The day the sky cracked open, 9/11, I promised myself I would never go back. I never wanted to go back to "workin' for The Man". I never wanted to be a slave to my fear. I never wanted to look at someone else with hate in my lungs. Hate made September 11, 2001 happen. Hate made April 19, 1995 happen. I couldn't lend any more energy to such a movement.

I quit my job, moved away from what I thought was killing me and started over. Back to Nashville, stopping in OKC, on to California. I made a lot of mistakes since then. But, dear GOD, I've been trying to be better.

If someone were to ask me how 9/11 changed me I have to say that it turned me on to love in the broader, more true definition of what love is. I have to choose this way; it's not a natural thing for me to do when I am angry or hurt. I have to choose to act in love - otherwise I am no improvement on that person I was the day before the attacks.

I hope that is what most people can say today. Maybe we haven't yet loved everyone. Maybe we haven't been as good as we hoped in those early days when the smoke was still in the air. But I like to think that even as our personal worlds propel forward into discussions of national healthcare, socialism, and back to school routines, we are doing more positive things than negative. It's the least we can do to honor the people who died on those horrible days and in these tragic wars that continue.

This song was out on CD before 9/11, but since then, it's been my hippie anthem. It never fails to help me check my motives and look at what I have right in front of me.

"They Stood Up For Love"

naked lovers feel the blood beneath their veins
electric nerves communicate
with tiny explosions through our brains
who is this energy that never left or came?
give rise to passion the only glory
of this human story

I give my heart and soul to the one

we spend all of our lives goin' out of our minds
looking back to our birth, forward to our demise
even scientists say, everything is just light
not created, destroyed but eternally bright
masters in everytime lord in everyplace
those who stood up for love down in spite of the hate
in spite of the hate

who put the flower in the barrel of that gun?
who lit the candle that started the fire,
burnt down the fortress, the throne?
who could house all the refugees in a single shack
or a lowly bungalow?
who lives in a different dimension, free from the
struggles we know?

I give my heart and soul to the one

we spend all of our lives goin' out of our minds
looking back to our birth, forward to our demise
even scientists say, everything is just light
not created, destroyed but eternally bright
masters in everytime lord in everyplace
those who stood up for love down in spite of the hate
we spend all of our lives goin' out of our minds
they live in the light

we made it to the moon
but we can't make it home
waitin' on a rescue that never comes
made it to the moon
but we can't make it home
maybe home is where the heart is given up
to the one
to the one

we spend all of our lives goin' out of our minds
lookin' back to our birth, forward to our demise
we spend all of our lives goin' out of our minds
they live, they

they stood up for love
stood up for love
stood up for love
they stood up for love
stood up for love
stood up for love

we spend all of our lives goin' out of our minds
masters in everytime
we spend all of our lives goin' out of our minds
stood up for love
